My Spring Fashion Essentials Part 2

Trench Coats

Trench coats first gained popularity in World War 1 and World War 2 as they were worn by British and French soldiers, as there were favoured over the wool coats as they were too heavy to drag through the trenches. Hence the coat became known as the trench coat. The trench coat has also featured in some iconic movie scenes in Breakfast at Tiffany’s and Casablanca. The classic trench coat became popular for women from the 1960’s right till present day, as stars such as Marilyn Monroe and Bridgette Bardot all wore the classic jacket. The reason the trench coat is so popular and stands the test of the time as a classic wardrobe is that it can be dressed up or down, Jackie Kennedy wore the trench coat over a ball gown and Jane Birkin wore it with denim, ballet flats and a straw bag. For me, it’s a classic piece that will never not be in my wardrobe as it never goes out of style, looks good with anything and Is perfect for the spring season with the unpredictable British weather.

Stripes

Once a time stripes were reserved only for prisoners, clowns, prostitutes and the condemned. In the 19th century, stripes became chic thanks to people like sailors and Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria dressed her 4-year-old son Albert in a sailor suit to board the royal yacht. From this day people adore it when children wear stripes and nautical. My mum dressed me in a sailor dress and it’s something I dress my own daughter in. The striped ”Breton” shirt became popular in the mid 19th century thanks to Breton workers and still is as popular today. It was in the 20th century that nautical stripes first became fashionable thanks to the legend that is CoCo Chanel, inspired by her trip to the French Riveria and inspired by the sailor’s outfits she launched the first nautical collection. Famous iconic film stars such as Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Bridgette Bardot all rocked the classic stripe. In the 1990s the classic Breton tee was labelled a grunge staple thanks to the late Kurt Cobain. For me, a classic striped tee is something that I will always have in my wardrobe as it’s a timeless classic that never goes out of style. You can pair the classic tee with denim, flats trench coat and a straw bag for a classic Parisian look.

Denim

The first interpretation of jeans wasn’t denim at all but a canvas fabric and worn and loved by workmen and miners. Levis Strauss switched to blue dye denim that we all know and love. He then introduced rivets to stop them fraying. Levis eventually went branded and mainstream and he removed some of the rivets for daily fashion comfort. Lee jeans then added embellishments like the zipper fly. In the 1880s after the success of the humble denim jeans, Levi Strauss introduced a top to match which we now know and love as the Denim Jacket. In the 1950s jeans became famous with rebels like James Dean wearing them this made them popular with male teens and led to some schools banning denim as it was seen as what rebels wore ( think the t-birds in Grease). In 1960’s thanks to famous Hollywood legend that was Marilyn Monroe wearing jeans, it inspired other women to wear them.

Timeline of denim evolution

  • The 1950s and 1960s – baggy dad jeans
  • The 1970s – wide flares and Bell Bottoms. In the 1970s denim skirts, we’re first introduced as people recycled old jeans into long denim skirts. Over time the classic denim skirt has evolved with hemlines getting shorter, wild designs and embellishments.
  • The The The 1980s – mum jeans and acid wash
  • The The The 1990s – lighter washes, and frayed hems and holes.
  • The 2000s – low waists, embroidery, and faded thighs.
  • Present day – we cooperate all the trends but skinny jeans, mum jeans rule the streets.

For me, denim will always have a place in my heart and wardrobe with denim jackets, jeans, shorts and skirts all taking up room in my wardrobe. Denim is such a classic piece that never seems to go out of style and with so much variation there’s a style out there to suit everybody.

Well, its official spring is here in the UK and after last months snow, I’ve finally decided enough’s enough of winter clothes don’t get me wrong I love snuggling up in warm coats and jumpers but I’m now ready for dresses and bright colours and finally transitioned my wardrobe into spring/summer. In this post, I will be talking through my Spring Wardrobe staples that for me make that transition from colder weather into hopefully warmer weather easier.

My Spring Fashion Essentials

Duster Jacket

A Duster jacket for me is a Spring essential as there are lightweight and are perfect for layering. There are also a really versatile piece and can really elevate an outfit. Dusters if fitted correctly can also make you appear taller which is a win-win for petite girls like me. For this outfit, I styled this sleeveless Mauve pink duster jacket with a grey knitted choker neck bodysuit as it still isn’t quite warm enough in the UK to not wear a layer under a sleeveless coat. I also think the grey is a perfect colour combination with the pink of the duster jacket.

My Top Duster Jackets of the High Street

1. Boohoo Waterfall Grey Duster  2. RI Pink Bird Jacquard Duster 3. Missguided Black waterfall duster  4. Missguided Pink Waterfall duster

Basic Bodysuits

Basic bodysuits like this grey knit ribbed choker bodysuit that I’m wearing in this picture are a spring wardrobe essential. Bodysuits are a versatile piece and can be paired with anything and are great for layering as they come in a range of styles and colours.

My Top Basic Bodysuits from The High Street

  1. PLT Set of two basic racer back bodysuits  2. New Look Slogan Striped Vest Bodysuit  3. Missguided Long Sleeved V neck Bodysuit

Culottes

I love culottes I wasn’t sure about them at first as been petite anything that’s cropped can be tricky to wear as it can make me look shorter. However, I purchased these culottes from Primark and another printed pair and I love them. Culottes are another versatile piece as you can dress them up for a night out with a dressy top and heels or dress them down with trainers and a basic tee. I paired mine with Silver glitter ankle boots as the weathers still not warm enough to have your feet out. That’s why I like culottes you can wear with boots when the weathers cold and with sandals or trainers when the weathers warmer.

My Top Culotte Picks From The High Street.

1.Topshop Gingham Print Culottes.   2. Missguided Orange Floral Print Culottes. 3. Boohoo Pink Pleated Wide Leg Culottes

Large Bag

A large bag in Spring is essential as here in the UK we never know what the weathers gonna be like it can be sunny one minute and cold the next and we never know when we’re gonna get a rain shower. So a larger bag comes in handy for carrying around an umbrella, shades and extra layers of clothing that you may need.

My Top Large Bag Picks From The High Street

  1. New Look Red Tote Bag 2. New Look Camel Wing Tote Bag 3. RI White Laser Cut Tote Bag 4. RI Black Studded Slouch Bag  5. Ted Baker Large Pink Shopper Bag

Ankle Boots

Even in the warmer months, my go-to shoe of choice is a heeled ankle boot, id even wear them on the beach if I could.  For me, an ankle boot is comfy to wear as you can wear socks so you don’t get blisters and are easier to walk in. There are also such a versatile piece and look great when paired with jeans, shorts and summer tea dresses. In spring I like to wear girly tea dresses but then wear with ankle boots and a biker or denim jacket to add edge to an outfit.

My Top Ankle Boot Picks From The High Street

1. ASOS White Embellished Buckle Ankle Boot.  2. Missguided Black Cut Out Studded Boots. 3. ASOS Silver Glitter Ankle Boots

Sunglasses

Its finally shade weather here in the UK, I just love a good pair of shades they just add an extra element to an outfit and can make it go from drab to fab. They also hide a multitude of sins if you didn’t have time to wear makeup or get much sleep pop on a pair of shades and no one will know. I just Love Shades.

My Top Shade Picks From The High Street

  1. ASOS Tortoise Shell Cat Eye Shades 2. ASOS Oversized Square Shades 3. ASOS Oval Red Shades 4. RI Ombre Lense Aviator Shades

March Favourites

Hi my beauty’s, hope all is well. Can you believe we’re already a quarter of a way through the year and it’s finally Spring even though someone really needs to notify the sun as we had lots of snow in March. March has been a busy month for me, as I started a new job role, and at the moment it is fitting around me and my family well and I do enjoy it. Also, March was the month I finally got my 20-month-old into her own bedroom and mostly sleeping through till morning. If you’re a parent you’ll know how much of a big achievement this is. Let me know in the comments if you would be interested in me mentioning in my monthly favourites, things that I helped find make parenting easier. Without further ado here are my monthly favourites.

March Faves 2018 - Beauty

L’Oréal Infailable Shaping Sticks

I picked up these three shaping sticks from boots at the beginning of the month as they were on offer for 3 for 2 and came with a free L’Oréal beauty blender. Since purchasing these 3 shaping sticks I have used them every day since. I have not used the blender however as I dislike using them (I know shock horror right, Please tell me I’m not the only one who doesn’t get the hype). I picked up two of the foundation sticks a light one in 120 vanilla rose for the base and to conceal, and the darker one in 210 Cappuccino to contour and add definition. I then bought the strobing stick in 501 Oh My Jewels.

I actually picked up the lighter shade thinking it was going to be a lot lighter and more of a highlight/concealer shade. This shades, however, is a perfect match for my skin tone as a foundation. The foundations easy to apply and blends into the skin like a dream due to its creamy formula. It provides medium coverage so concealer is needed for the areas where more coverage is needed.

The contour shade is rather warm toned so a light hand is needed when applying otherwise you can look rather orange. It blends into the skin so easily and is really pigmented so a little goes a long way and definitely does add warmth and definition to my face.

The strobing stick is easy to blend and provides a nice natural glow to the skin. Overall I love how these sticks work together to create a nice natural look for everyday makeup and make getting ready easier.

Nivea Lip Care Pearly Shine

March was a seriously cold month with what the beast from the east not just striking once but three times so wearing lip balm was essential to keep dry cracked lips at bay. This lip balm is perfect as it keeps lips feeling smooth and soft as it provides the delicate lip area with moisturiser and SPF protection and also provides lips with a subtle pearly shine great for wearing alone or with other lipsticks. The packagings also cute.

Too faced la Creme Colour Drenched Lipstick in Razzle Dazzle Rose.

I was shopping at TK Maxx when I discovered this little gem for £7.99, I mean I’ve heard all about two-faced beauty products and well being too much of a cheapskate I would never buy one of their lipsticks at full price I mean I’m not made of money. That was however until I tried this lipstick I mean I’m sold, it’s one of the nicest feeling lipsticks I have ever had on my lips. It makes them feel so soft and hydrated. The colour is the perfect pink for me and it’s super pigmented and has a nice shine effect to it. The colour lasts a few hours.

Checked Baker Boy Cap

Another month another new hat to add to my hat collection. I swear at this rate I’m going to need another room just for my hats. I was in TK Maxx and saw this beauty and tried it on and it matched my outfit perfectly so I had to buy it. I love checks and plan on adding more of them to my wardrobe.

Sunglasses

Somewhere in between the rain and snow, March did surprise us with the odd sunny day in which I decided to bring out the shades. Sunglasses are one of my favourite things about Spring/summer. They hide a multitude of sins and you can fall asleep on your commute without anybody knowing. I also love how they make an outfit feel complete.

Lifestyle Favourites

March Faves 2018 - Lifestyle

Nescafé Gold Instant Coffee Sachets

This is not a sponsored post by Nescafé or anything I just really loved their flavoured coffee sachets this month. Every Monday I’d pop into my local ASDA and pick up a new flavour of coffee to try that week. I’d look forward to waking up in a morning to the taste of these delicious coffees. It really is the small things in life for me. My favourite is definitely the toffee nut, and white chocolate and pistachio mocha.

Love Lessons by Jacqueline Wilson

A month ago I went into my mum’s loft and came across a box of treasures including photos, magazines, MP3 players and this book. Jacqueline Wilson was my favourite author as a child and teenager. I read and loved all of her books as a youngster especially this one and the girls series. Rereading this book again was very nostalgic and reminded me of being 14 and having a crush on a teacher I mean haven’t we all. This book is about a teenage girl and her sister who’s dad is very controlling and home schools them and keeps them away from normality. When suddenly her dad’s taken ill the girls are thrown in at the deep end and sent back to school. The only person one of the girls can relate to is the handsome art teacher and develops a crush, he couldn’t possibly feel the same way, could he. ‘re reading this as an adult it has slightly a darker feel to it than reading it the first time.
